Attorney General Referrals Section

When the Division has exhausted its collection activities without success, the case may be referred to the Office of the Attorney General for additional collection actions. Such actions may include domesticating the Division of Taxation’s lien in another state where assets of the debtor may have been located and/or instituting wage garnishment proceedings.

The Dishonored Check/Court Referral Unit investigates bad checks and dishonored electronic funds payments. That unit, which is part of the AG Referral Section, reviews both individual and business tax cases, including businesses that failed to register with the State. The unit can refer cases of nonpayment to the Division's Office of Criminal Investigation for potential prosecution.
